Why Volunteer?

Parents struggling to cope with life’s challenges often find it difficult to parent effectively and successfully, and this has an impact on their children.
So when a family asks us for help, it is the volunteer who makes the difference, and helps the family to make the changes they want. Positive changes are conducive to happier, safer childhoods, where children are able to achieve their full potential.
Home-Start’s volunteers are a lifeline for families, and there are lots of ways to get involved. You can visit parents and children in their homes, act as a trustee, help raise awareness or funds and so much more.
You will be trained and supported by skilled Home-Start staff. And you could turn a family’s life around.

You don’t require any formal qualifications; you just need to have empathy, be a parent yourself and have an understanding that parenting is not always easy, or straight forward.

We offer volunteers a 40 hour training course, usually one day a week from 10am until 2.30pm (excluding school holidays). Once completed, we then match you with parents struggling to cope, who would benefit from our support. Visiting the family’s home for a couple of hours every week, to provide friendship, practical and emotional support tailored to the needs of the family.
